Sebastijan and Danijel Demirovic brothers from Prokuplje are not so different than any other Roma children, except that the brothers, besides regular school, attend junior school of music “Kornelije Stankovic” in Prokuplje. Sebastijan Demirovic is 13 years old and multitalented. He plays brass instruments, and has been attending accordion lessons for four years and violin lessons for five years now. The brothers practice in their room for several hours everyday.
“It is an amazing feeling to play a violin” says Sebastijan. “I love the violin and I love to practice. Violin is my life.” |

Knjazevac, Serbia
Slavica Rakic from Roma settlement in Knjazevac goes five times per day to fetch water from the public fountain. When she bathes her children or wash clothes, sometimes she goes to get water ten times per day. Her husband doesn’t help her, because he is working all day long to feed the family of six. During the winter, when the public fountain is usually frozen, the only thing left for Slavica Rakic to do is to go to ask for water at her non-Roma neighbors. |

Living mostly in Roma settlements, most Roma loyally follow the traditional way of living, which bears numerous unwritten rules, which are in most cases hardly understandable in modern societies. Various customs, premature marriages, negatively affect all aspects of Roma's life. Possibly, the most negative effect, this way of life has on education. Large percentage of Roma children are excluded from the education system. This is the one of the reasons why Roma girls get married too early. In their teen age they already learn to do house chores and take care of younger brothers and sisters. |

Ajsa Becirovic, eight year old Roma girl is an excellent pupil, attending a primary school “Vuk Karadzic” in Nis. She is one of the pupils living in non-asphalt streets in Roma settlement “Beograd mala” who every morning have to wear plastic bags on their shoes in order to get to school clean.
“I have to wear plastic bags on my shoes, because when I go to school dirty, other children make fun of me” says little Ajsa. |

Prokuplje, Serbia
Valentina Baktijarevic, 11 year old Roma girl from Prokuplje, is a gifted writer and winner of the “Vitez” award in the children poetry category. She says that the biggest award for her is publishing of her first book of poetry “My word”.
“I love to write poems. When I’m writing, I am in my own world, world of imagination. I don’t have specified topics, because when I write, it is what I feel” says Valentina.
Her parents are unemployed. They do everything they can to support Valentina’s gift. |

RomaDecade.com
RomaDecade.com continues to publish productions produced by Roma radio and TV station RTV Nisava from Nis, Serbia.
In the next 6 months RTV Nisava will be working on production of TV magazines "Living together" and investigative radio broadcasts "What's up with Roma Decade?", in partnership with A-Media from Belgrade. RomaDecade.com will regularly publish these materials. "Living together" TV magazines will be published with subtitles in English and Romani.
